Our Heritage

Uchucklesaht Tribe

The Thunder Spirit brand is an exquisite cannabis line, meticulously curated and imbued with the rich cultural heritage of the Uchucklesaht Tribe.

Nestled on the picturesque west coast of Vancouver Island, the Uchucklesaht Tribe is an esteemed member of both the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.

The Community

The Uchucklesaht Tribe has 313 Uchucklesaht members across two villages situated approximately 24 miles down Barkley Sound, southwest from Port Alberni. The first village is immediately past the Uchucklesaht Inlet on the West side of Barkley Sound, named Cowishulth. The second village is located at the head of Uchucklesaht Inlet and is named Hilthatis.

The Thunderbird

A majestic creature who protects the Uchucklesaht Tribe and rests in what is known as the Thunderbird’s nest or T’iitsk’in Paawats, made up of 5 mountain tops in the region around Hucuktlis Lake.

It is believed that the Thunderbird flashes its eyes to create lightning and flaps its wings to deliver thunder over the lands of the Uchucklesaht; known at times as the rainiest region in the entire world. In this way, the Thunderbird is said to be the guardian of the tribe’s sacred lake and the keeper of its pristine supply of water.

The Water

Starting from the mountain tops in the Thunderbird’s nest, and flowing as water down to the forests, the wildlife and the fish which have sustained the Uchucklesaht people since the beginning of time.

Water has played an integral part in the tribe’s culture and heritage and the tribe and its people continue to protect and conserve the over 1,900 hectares of pristine lands surrounding Hucuktlis Lake. It is this very water and the Thunder Spirit within it that nourishes all cannabis flower.
